Full-time, Regular appointment, Tenure track, 9 months/year (plus 3
month summer extension).
LOCATION: Library Systems Department, Consortium Library,
University of Alaska Anchorage
SALARY: Commensurate with academic preparation and experience.

SUMMARY: The Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage
(UAA) is recruiting for the position of Web Services Librarian. We are
looking for an energetic, knowledgeable, and creative individual to
join us in offering superb library services in our new state-of-the-art
library building, slated for completion in summer of 2004.
UAA is a comprehensive metropolitan university consisting of the main
campus in Anchorage, three extended colleges, and additional sites in
rural communities and on military installations. UAA offers
certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and masters programs in the
arts, humanities, sciences, and professions.
Located near the Chugach Mountains in Alaska's largest city
(population: 270,000), the Consortium Library serves both UAA, with
12,000 students, and Alaska Pacific University, a private institution
with 500 students. From UAA's fully networked campus, the Library
delivers its electronic library services to both university
communities. The Consortium Library holds more than 785,000 volumes,
over 3,400 print serials, and licenses over 200 databases that provide
access to nearly 25,000 full-text periodicals. The Library has
approximately 20.5 FTE faculty and 22.5 FTE staff.
The Consortium Library Systems Department oversees at least a dozen
network servers, provides desktop support for Library computers, and
maintains the Librarys web site. Other departmental staff and faculty
with whom the Web Services Librarian will work are the LAN and Server
Manager, the Desktop Support/Training Manager, and the Head of the
Library Systems Department. The University of Alaska system is a
member of the Internet2 initiative. UAAs Information Technology
Services supports DHCP and wireless connectivity on campus, including
the Library.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Master of Library and Information Science (MLS) or
equivalent from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school
is required. Candidate must have demonstrated knowledge of the
integration of new technologies into the delivery of user-centered
information services; relevant experience in design, development, and
management of web sites, including the use of site management tools;
excellent layout and graphics skills; demonstrated proficiency with
standards-based hypertext markup language (HTML) and web authoring
tools; scripting languages (e.g., PHP); database systems (e.g., MySQL,
MS Access); and Windows and/or Linux operating systems. Strong interest
in instructional technology and design; excellent communication and
collaboration skills; and previous experience providing reference
service using basic print and online tools and databases is required.
Applicant with working knowledge of web content management systems;
experience with instructional design and courseware management systems
(e.g., Blackboard); project management skills; and experience providing
reference in an academic library is preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Web Services Librarian reports to the Head of
the Library Systems Department in the Consortium Library. The
incumbent manages the library web site and chairs the librarys Web
Team, working closely with other Library Systems Department staff,
librarians, the public, and the universitys information technology
staff on ongoing design, development, and evaluation of the librarys
web presence. The librarian conducts usability testing of the librarys
web services; provides technical expertise and instruction on web tools
and software to library staff; provides technical support for multiple
vendors web-based databases; works closely with reference and
instruction librarians, promotes the librarys web site as an
instructional tool; and helps advance the librarys programs in library
instruction and information literacy by assisting to develop web-based
instructional courses and materials. The incumbent stays informed of
trends in web technologies and in instructional technology and design;
provides four hours of reference assistance per week; serves as a
library liaison to an academic department; and serves on library,
university, and professional and/or public committees.
