best approach to making a series of articles searchable on the web

Hi,

We have a collection of articles which we wish to make available on the web. We hope to make these searchable under a number of indices eg Name Index, Placename Index and General Index within the website. We would also like to offer people the ability to search for search terms occurring within the same sentence, occurring within the same paragraph and occurring within the same article.

What is the best approach. Is there a web search engine that we can purchase that will give searchers this kind of power right out of the box? Or should we type each article into a database with each sentence as a separate record? Is marking the document up as an XML file the way to go?

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Regards
John
