HTML question - lists

I'm working on a Web page that combines images and bulleted lists.  If I put the images on the right side, the list items appear correctly (see <http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/mssc/almanac/vvisalm9test.htm>).  However, if I move the images to the left-hand side of the page, using <img .... align="left">, the bullets on the list items disappear (see <http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/mssc/almanac/vvisalm9.htm>).

Any suggestions as to why this happens, and how to prevent it?  (I know using a table would solve the problem, but I was trying to avoid using tables for layout purposes.)
