Librarian - Instruction
THE UNIVERSITY: Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the
California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48
miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of
approximately 7,600 students with 500 faculty. The University is organized
into six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education,
Extended Education, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. Within the
traditional structure is an interdisciplinary program of liberal studies.
The University offers bachelor's degrees in 42 fields and master's degrees
in 15.
THE LIBRARY: Completed in 2000, the University Library in the Jean and
Charles Schulz Information Center is positioned as the cultural center of
campus and serves as a resource for the entire region. The University
Library maintains a high profile on campus, hosting workshops, cultural
events and exhibitions. Our Information Commons promotes a public computing
environment that encourages the integration of access to library resources
with software applications.
The Library has a regular and temporary staff of 40, including 9.5 FTE
library faculty, and approximately 40 student employees. The collection
includes approximately 600,000 volumes, more than 1,000 active print
periodical subscriptions, over 15,000 online journals and databases, 1.5
million microforms, 75,000 government documents, and a growing collection of
audio and video sources and software. The University Library is fully
networked, including wireless access; uses Innovative Interfaces as its
integrated library system; has an ASRS (automated storage and retrieval
system); and has a total annual budget of approximately $2.5 million.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
The University Library in the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center at
Sonoma State University seeks a creative and energetic colleague committed
to the highest level of service. This full-time tenure-track faculty
appointment provides an opportunity to teach effective information seeking
and critical thinking skills in a dynamic and collaborative instruction
program. The incumbent will also provide individual instruction at the
Reference desk, through office hours and by appointment. Some evening and
weekend hours are required.
Responsibilities may include:
Participating in teaching information competency instructional offerings to
students of all levels and disciplines;
Developing and preparing library instructional materials;
Working as part of a team in program planning and assessment of information
competence and instructional program;
Collaborating effectively on library projects and programs, including
planning and evaluation;
Participating in library and campus cultural activities;
Contributing to outreach efforts and special projects in support of
librarywide and campus initiatives;
Providing reference service to a diverse community of library users;
Participating in collection development and faculty liaison
responsibilities;
Representing the library on campus-wide committees and teams.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:
Required:
Master of Library or Information Science from an A.L.A.-accredited
institution (or equivalent);
Knowledge of or experience with emerging issues related to teaching,
learning technologies and information literacy standards for higher
education;
High degree of computer literacy and familiarity with library and
information technologies, including databases, search engines, metadata, and
other information management and search tools;
Strong public services orientation and commitment to a student-centered
environment, including ability to mentor students of all ages;
Knowledge of reference sources commonly used within an academic library;
Effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills;
Continuing commitment to professional development;
Ability to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously;
Flexibility in response to changing circumstances in the academic
environment.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, presentation and
communication skills, both written and oral; and the ability to work
independently and flexibly in a team environment, with a strong commitment
to serving library users.
Desirable:
Library instruction, or similar teaching experience;
Experience with courseware, instructional design and/or web authoring;
Experience in the delivery of reference service within an academic library,
including the use of resources in all formats;
Ability to demonstrate initiative and creativity within a public services
environment.
To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory
performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research,
creative achievement and professional development; service to the
University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure
may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal
period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time
probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the
normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the
President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the
department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).² Tenure is
required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.
RANK and SALARY: Appointment will be at the rank of Senior Assistant
Librarian, salary range of $45,000- approximately $52,000, commensurate with
qualifications and experience. Actual hiring salary within this range is
dependent upon educational preparation and experience.
