Luminary Lectures @ Your Library present "Surviving the Internet
."

Irene E. McDermott, a Reference Librarian/Systems Manager at the San Marino
Public Library will be presenting a lecture entitled, "Surviving the
Internet: Strategies for the High-Tech Reference Desk" at the Library of
Congress on Friday, October 25th, 2002, from 10:30am-12:00pm in the
Pickford Theater of the Library of Congress' James Madison Building,
located at First and Independence Avenue S.E., Washington, D.C. Seating at
this event will be limited to 65, so please allow time to arrive early.

McDermott will speak about methods for adapting traditional reference
skills to a digital environment. She plans to address the sudden appearance
of the World Wide Web the at the reference desk and to discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of this new technology for librarians. She
will suggest a number of sturdy and reliable Web sites that can be used to
answer reference questions.

McDermott said, "I love talking about techno-stress: librarians freaking
out about having to be computer experts all of a sudden. The book is
supposed to be sort of a warm washcloth over the tired eyes of these
anxious people. So, I can address this issue: what is gained by librarians
from the Internet, what is lost, and a few tips to help us all cope!"

Diane Kresh, Director Public Service Collections Library of Congress raves
about McDermott's upcoming book, The Librarians Internet Survival Guide.
She said, "Finally-a comprehensive handbook written by a practitioner for
practitioners. The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide can be read cover to
cover or one can cherry pick according to interest: biography, news, kids,
health, privacy, it's all here." To read more about her upcoming book, "The
Librarians Internet Survival Guide: Strategies for the High-Tech Reference
Desk," go to: < http://shop.store.yahoo.com/infotoday/libsinsurgui.html>.
