Problems with New Web Page and IE 5.0

I'm in the process of re-making the Library Web site for the Institute
-- mostly to be more user friendly.  I use 1st Page 2000 -- but mostly I
hand code.  I've been trying to incorporate CSS as much as possible and
to the extent I can understand it.  I began using HTML 4.01
Transitional, but have tried using XHTML 1.0 (as suggested here) for
more recent pages.  I attempt to validate pages after creation using the
W3C Validator.  Mostly the pages validate, but occasionally they don't
because of tags I use so that the pages work in Netscape 4.08.

I've loaded Netscape 4.08 and the latest version of Mozilla to join the
IE 6.0 already on my computer and check each page to make sure they look
reasonable on each of these browsers.  Finally, the Institute uses
Windows 2000, so I rely on ASP to run the SSI (my navigation bar), to
power my forms, and to insert the date when the page was updated.

So far, everything seemed to be working fine.  But I was horrified to
find that some of my pages are completely falling apart on the IE 5.0 I
run on my home computer.  They stretch out for an almost infinite
distance horizontally.  The ultimate Web faux pas.  I've gone over the
code several times and can find nothing wrong.  We're very small -- I'm
the lone techie in the Library

I would really appreciate another pair of eyes!
