Head of Customer Services Librarian
Florida Gulf Coast University
As a result of restructuring, and the creation of a new Department of
Customer Services, FGCU Library Services is seeking a leader to develop,
implement, and assess creative and effective customer service to meet the
Guiding Principles and Mission of the University and Library Services.
The Head of the Customer Services reports to the Associate Director and will
be an energetic and innovative leader with a strong customer-oriented
approach and creative vision responsible for planning and directing the
delivery of library services including general reference & instruction,
circulation/reserves, and ILL/document. Directly supervises 5.0 FTE.
Responsible for the development and implementation of customer-oriented
goals, objectives, standards, and policies/procedures. Serve as a member of
the Operations Coordination Committee, which is responsible for the overall
coordination and communication of Library inter-unit activities. Provide
leadership in the library and service to the university community. Will
have regularly scheduled hours on the general reference desk and will
participate in user education and credit instruction.
Requirements: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or foreign
equivalent. Experience in providing high quality electronic and print
reference service. Able to offer learning-centered instruction and
presentations. Successful supervisory experience in Circulation,
Instruction, and/or Reference. Understanding of the variety of public
services functions and knowledge of best practices and trends in the
profession. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff,
colleagues, faculty, and students. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong
computing skills. Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to
foster that capacity in others. Effective organizational and time
management skills. Superior oral and written English language communication
skills. Ability to work some evenings and weekends. Evidence of interest
in professional development activities, including presentation and
publication.
Preferred: Strong record of professional and scholarly activity. A record
of successful implementation and management of developing, implementing, and
evaluating short-term and long-term projects. A second master’s degree or
higher. Experience with collection development. Ability to contribute to
the diversity of the organization
Located two hours south of Tampa Bay, Ft. Myers offers year-round

the southern US.” FGCU, which opened its doors in 1997, is a state
university of the liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies serving
undergraduate and master’s level students. It is particularly focused on
environmental sensitivity, interdisciplinary learning, innovative high
quality teaching, and service learning. The Library is the largest in
Southwest Florida and is planning for an addition to double its size by
2005. As a member of a statewide consortium, the library is migrating to
Aleph, the library management system designed by Ex Libris as the core of
the next-generation digital library.
APPOINTMENT: This is a non-tenure-earning faculty position with rank and
salary commensurate with experience. Salary: $40,000 - negotiable.
