On the Infotrac list, this came up as part of a discussion of Endnote and
password access. (quote reprinted with permission.)
<quote>
Those of you who follow this may want to pay attention to a recent
development. A subset of
the Z39.50 Implementers Group are working on a project they
call ZNG -- Z39.50 Next Generation -- to simplify the Z39.50 protocol and
make it more compatible with web technologies. A good summary of what they
plan to do is at http://www.loc.gov/z3950/agency/zng.html. If all the
web-based providers and
ISI cooperate on this, it might provide an alternative to username/password
access.
