Also, IME, the quickest way to extend a thread is for someone to
propose that it die.  That will then lead to discussions on whether it
should end or not, revitalization of the thread from the main
participants, flames of the one proposing the death of the thread, and
so forth.

The VERY best way to end a thread is to start another one that will
be of greater interest and/or importance.
