Lee Jaffe got a .com domain name because:

Do you know whether your ISP was acting on its own account or whether there
are guidelines for allocation of .org and .net domains? I know .edu tends to
be protected, but I wasn't asked about my organisational status when I
registered my US .org domain. I got the impression I could have been a .net
as easily.
