POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Coordinator of Data Services
Assistant/Associate Librarian
$37,728 - $55,980 per annum, based upon qualifications

The University of California, Berkeley Library is seeking a Coordinator of
Data Services to plan and develop a numeric data program that combines a
historic printed collection with rapidly growing electronic resources.
Reporting to the Head of Research, Reference, and Collections, and working
with colleagues throughout the Library, the Coordinator of Data Services
will develop and coordinate a program of outreach to the user community of
faculty, students and researchers in accessing The Library's collection of
electronic data files.  The Coordinator of Data Services will also work to
develop strong alliances, cooperative arrangements and networking with
other campus data providers, such as UC Data Archive and Technical
Assistance (UC DATA).


SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership in the development of the Library's collection of numeric data
files, including identifying and providing access to numeric data files
available on the Internet, and developing means for access to data files
at UC Berkeley through local networks. Provide access to numeric data
files housed in the Library. Work with campus systems units, including the
Library Systems Office, to make data available. Development of
documentation, including web pages describing resources and services for
numeric data files, in cooperation with other campus data providers;  Act
as liaison to UC DATA, and other campus data providers.  Outreach to
faculty and graduate students, including provision of training sessions in
numeric data files and relevant analytic tools.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required:  The Coordinator of Data Services should be comfortable with a
variety of operating systems, installing and supporting a variety of
software. Ability to develop interfaces for data users with varying levels
of sophistication and various needs (e.g. statistical analysis).
Capability when necessary to develop software using programming/scripting
languages such as C, C++, csh, cgi, Perl, and Java.  Experience with
quantitative data in all formats, and demonstrated proficiency with social
sciences statistical packages and software (e.g., Oracle, SAS, STATA, and
SPSS).  Familiarity with variety of hardware, networks, software, and
programming/scripting languages.  Strong interpersonal and communications
skills; user centered service orientation. MLIS from an ALA accredited
institution or equivalent degree. Minimum of three years experience
organizing data files and working with users to provide access and
value-added data services in a research setting, preferably a research
library.

Desirable: Graduate degree in a social science with statistical analysis
emphasis.
