Here's a discussion of DC and search engines:

Is There a Future for Dublin Core and Metadata in a Practical World?
Martin R. Kalfatovic, Digital Projects Librarian, Smithsonian Institution
Libraries and
Suzanne C. Pilsk, Cataloguer, Smithsonian Institution Libraries
http://www.sil.si.edu/staff/cil2001/index.htm

They presented a session at Computers in Libraries 2001 and said search
engines
typically don't look at metadata of any kind. They did find a few
specialized engines
that used DC:
MetaChem http://metachem.ch.adfa.edu.au/search-adv.html
AVEL http://avel.edu.au/AVEL-advance.html
Bridges http://www.bridges.state.mn.us/metadata.html

Personally, I tend to use (non-DC) title, publisher, keywords,
description, and language
metatags.

Mary Beth Faccioli asked:
>Is it the case that search engines do not recognize
>Dublin Core metadata? If this is true, are people
>using it anyway? Are you also including non-DC
>elements, e.g. ...
