Emacs is not my editor of choice, though I have great respect for 
its reputation.

Pico I would not recommend to anyone :)

Vi is my favourite of the three, but you really may want to check 
out Vim (that's Vi 'IMproved) for an editor I can only describe as Vi 
on steroids.  It is my editor of choice these days (ported to 
Windows also), and even though it has cost me several months of 
learning curve effort, I can now say that it was well worth it - wow!
