According to Douglas Adams in "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy", the
people of Earth are descended from "salesmen, hairstylists, telephone
sanitizers, and various other marketing executives" who were expelled from
the planet Golgafrincham, being the useless 1/3 of the population there.

The remaining 2/3 lived happy, fulfilling lives until they all suddenly died
from a virulent disease contracted by using a dirty telephone.
