LITA offers two library technology Regional Institutes in Chicago
Further your knowledge of solutions to common technology problems faced
by today's libraries by attending the popular LITA Regional Institutes,
Database Driven Web Sites and Proxy Web Servers and Authentication.
For your convenience the Institutes will be offered together in Chicago
on March 22 and 23. Register for both institutes and save $50!
At the Database Driven Web Sites institute learn how easy it can be to
add dynamic content to your web site. This institute will outline the
range of solutions available for delivering database-driven content
over the web. Attendees will gain an understanding of how a dynamic
web site works, be able to identify applications and select appropriate
solutions, understand basic concepts of relational database design as
they relate to displaying data on the web, and gain practical skills in
how to implement several software solutions. This program is intended
for web managers who have basic knowledge of HTML and some familiarity
with relational database concepts.
Database Driven Web Sites presenter Kristin Antelman is Head of Systems
and Networking at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Library.
She is the author of "Getting Out of the HTML Business: The
Database-Driven Web Site Solution" _Information Technology and
Libraries_ (December 1999).
The Proxy Web Servers & Authentication institute is a combination of
instruction on the theory and use of proxy servers in libraries and
practical examples of implementations. Discussion will follow on the
background of proxy servers as defined in the HTTP protocol
specification, application of proxy servers for conserving bandwidth,
and restricting access to specified sites. Special emphasis will be
placed on using proxy servers to access IP address-restricted
resources, including a discussion of alternatives to proxy servers.
This program is intended for systems librarians and computer
professionals with a background in providing web services. Some
technical knowledge about the management of web servers, such as
installing CGI programs, is assumed. Knowledge of C and/or PERL is
recommended.
Proxy Web Servers & Authentication presenter Peter Murray is the
Computer Services Librarian at the University of Connecticut Law
Library. He has served as Programs Committee Chair (1999) and Chair
(1999-2000) of the Innovative Users Group. In 1999, Peter was awarded
the "Highly Commended Award" by MCB University Press for his article
"World Wide Web Technologies in CWRU Libraries," published in New
Library World. See more about Peter at www.PandC.org/peter/work/.
