We at the North Suburban Library System have a public information kiosk
project currently underway. The goal of the project is to develop a kiosk
product that is simple, secure, inexpensive, flexible, and fairly easy to
deploy and install. The kiosk device itself is a touchscreen unit running
Linux with a stripped down browser interface (offering only basic navigation
tools). It can run off the network or can act as a standalone device
serving up pages with its own internal web server. The kiosk can be managed
either locally or remotely though a simple web based administration tool.
It is reasonably "bulletproof" and should be deployable in a variety of
public settings. Because it is based on standard commodity hardware and
open source software the cost savings of the kiosk is significant -- on an
order of magnitude -- compared to some of the commercially available systems
we were looking at. The project is currently in a pilot phase with units
being being tested by a couple of our member libraries.
We plan to officially unveil the project within the next couple of months,
and at that time I can supply more information about our kiosk project and
the link to the project website, if anyone is interested.

Please reply to the list as well. The NJ State Library is providing a grant
for the kiosks and we are contemplating providing one. We'd also like to
see what those who already providing them to say.
Thanks,
