I found this a really interesting idea.  So I went looking and its been done
at least once.  As far as a dedicated effort I don't know.

Something I've been wondering... Is anyone aware of any efforts to archive
and
preserve player piano rolls, by converting them to electronic form?

These rolls are an interesting precursor to binary data storage, paper tape,
etc. More to the point, I believe the format could be converted cleanly to
MIDI format, with a fairly straightforward scanning device.

Imagine people listening to piano rolls, on headphones, in your library...
