Watch out for comparing inches to inches. While most flat-panel monitors are
15-inch, that is roughly comparable to a 17" CRT (which has about a
15" viewing area). More to the point, most flat panels have a native
resolution of 1024x768 (and other resolutions are really ugly). Similarly,
most laptops sold in the last three years (or so) will be at least 800x600.

Keep in mind also that some folks don't run their browsers in full-screen
mode, and don't want to.

Finally, there is the ongoing problem of "will it print?"  For that reason
alone, a friend of mine who has wrestled with this recommends a maximum table
width of 600. And remember that if you include a graphic in a table column, it
can boost the width of that column to accommodate the graphic.
