HEAD OF REFERENCE SERVICES
Assistant or Associate Professor

Under the direction of the Associate Librarian for Public Services, 
provides leadership in planning, evaluation and implementing 
reference/instructional/information literacy services in a rapidly changing 
technological environment. Also responsible for the day-to-day management 
and operation of the Reference Department; supervising and evaluating 
reference staff, and the quality and currency of the reference collection 
in collaboration with reference librarians. Works collaboratively to create 
and implement new services that respond to the needs of faculty and 
students. Participates in reference services including nights and weekends, 
library instruction and collection development. Represents the Libraries on 
appropriate College/University committees. Qualifications: M.L.S., or its 
equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school, plus an additional 
Master’s degree or PhD. Highly desirable: Strong interpersonal, 
increasingly responsible managerial and supervisory experience, and 
excellent written and oral communication skills. Previous experience in 
academic reference, collection development and library instruction. 
Familiarity with electronic resources, Internet/WWW, demonstrated 
commitment to public service, ability to foster collegial environment, 
ability to meet tenure and promotion requirements.
Salary: Assistant Professor: $32,703 - $57,049; Associate Professor: 
$42,616 - $68,174, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Hunter College, the second oldest college in The City University of New 
York, is a coeducational, fully accredited college, with a large and 
diverse faculty in the liberal arts and sciences and in several 
professional schools. Hunter’s total enrollment is approximately 19,000 
students. Of these, about 8,000 are full-time undergraduate, an additional 
7,000 are part-time students, and over 4,000 are graduate students studying 
in arts and sciences, teacher education and professional programs at the 
Schools of Arts and Sciences, Education, Social Work, and Health Professions.

With a professional staff of 24 librarians, Hunter College Library contains 
over 750,000 volumes, 2,300 current periodical titles, and a nonprint 
collection of discs, tapes, scores, CD-ROMs, microforms, art slides and 
digitized slides. The library resources of Hunter College are available 
through CUNY+, an automated library system, which provides access to all 
CUNY library collections.
