I stand corrected. You can save a file in GIF format using the Linux version
of GIMP. Thanks for the tip Mark! There is also a plugin to allow you to
save in GIF with the Windows version of GIMP, if you are "in a country where
Unisys doesn't have a patent on the LZW algorithm, or you have a license
from Unisys." The plug-in is available on the GIMP for Windows web site
(http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/).

Don't know about the windows version, but you can save as gif format in
the Unix version. You can't change the file type to gif in the dialog box,
but if you put the .gif extension at the end of your filename, it will
save as gif. Maybe it is a secret feature?
