Dan raises many good points, and I have one small answer.

I can only speak for us, we've had > 4,000 people come in from the OSU home 
page since Dec 1.

Most libraries (and we are no exception) have terrible domain names, which 
are impossible for people to remember, and are very easy to find quickly 
when linked to from the base domain of the university.

So my guess is alot of people coming in from the home page from off campus 
really care about the library, and yes they should.
