Automatic Response for E-mail

Hi,
We are trying to implement an automatic response for clients who contact
us via our web-site.
On our Unix-based servers, we have content owners who primarily post web
pages that use the 'mailto' tag for contact information. At last count,
we had more than 8,000 'mailto' tags in use. (A few content owners use
forms instead and these pages are not the concern as we can provide a
'message received' page once the submit button is used.) What we are
trying to do is avoid re-coding all of those pages that use the 'mailto'
tag
My question: Is there a way at the server level (Unix) to allow for an
automatic response for e-mail sent in using <mailto:> ...either a
solution that brings the client to a browser window or one that e-mails
the client back to say that the message has been received?
Thanks for any ideas you might be able to provide.
