Cataloging = Creating Metadata
October 19-20, 2000 (Registration deadline: October 5)
Fee: $285
The term "metadata" has been a hot buzzword in the library
for at least five years. But is creating metadata all that different
from traditional cataloging? Is metadata only for Internet resources,
or can it be used for print resources too?This workshop provides an
overview of the major metadata schemas, such as Dublin Core.
Participants will get a good look at some leading metadata projects
and evaluate them as part of a group project.
Remote Access to Licensed Electronic Resources
November 9, 2000 (Registration deadline: October 28)
Fee: $185
Registration deadline: October 28
Libraries have a large role to undertake in licensing
electronic resources for use by their communities. Delivering
licensed information to your patrons wherever they may be and
wherever your information may be located is now possible. Who can get
in? Who is kept out? What methods and software are available for
making this happen and what are the costs? This course covers ways of
providing access to licensed electronic resources to patrons who may
not physically be in the library. Emphasis will be on IP address
restrictions and web-based proxy servers. Weíll compare the different
web-proxy server options and how each works. The technical level is
intermediate. This course is geared for electronic resources
decision-makers and implementers who must grapple with the realities
of access and authorization as electronic resources are acquired by
the library.
The Management of Digitization Projects
November 16-17, 2000 (Registration deadline: November 1)
Fee: $295
Completing a successful digitization project requires a
combination of critical skills including technical knowledge, project
management, communication, familiarity with materials, and the
ability to analyze the project with an eye toward adapting new and
useful technologies in mid-stream. The workshop will cover project
planning; timelines; budgets; technical specifications and standards;
capture, storage, and access; staffing and productivity.
