Siegel deserves credit for being able to rethink his original opinions on
many things, and revise or reverse them based on changes in technology or
user expectations.  In the 2nd edition of Creating Killer Web Sites, he
says, "Entry tunnels [his term for splash screens] are not appropriate for
most sites."  (p. 18)  Point taken: unless you have a very specific, very
well thought out design that requires them, avoid them.

For what it's worth, when libraries submit a splash screen to Libweb, I
make the link to the real, "contentful" homepage instead.
