This good advice from Thomas worked like a charm:

I could never get the download to work from the Netscape web site, but 
ftp'ing in, I got the whole package downloaded first try in less than 30 
seconds.

Even though I use my FTP client every day practically, I got amnesic about 
using it to download Netscape!
