                 _BioMOO: A Scholarly /Professional MOO_

As a result of my previous posting regarding Scholarly MOOs/MUDs, I have learned about _BioMOO_, the type of MOO that I was hoping to identify.
_BioMOO_ "is a professional community of Biology researchers. It is a place to come meet colleagues in Biology studies and related fields and brainstorm, to hold colloquia and conferences, to explore the serious side of this new medium." _BioMOO_ is a virtual meeting place for biologists, connected to the Globewide Network Academy [ http://www.gnacademy.org ]. The main physical part of _BioMOO_ is located at the BioInformatics Unit of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel."

Further information about _BioMOO_ can be found at the _BioMOO_
home page [ http://bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il/BioMOO/]. BioMOO was co-founded by Gustavo Glusman
[ http://bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il/Gustavo/ ], a PhD student in Bioinformatics, at the Weizmann Institute of Science and Jaime Prilusky
[ http://bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il/jaime_prilusky.html] Head of the Bioinformatics Unit at the Weizman Institute of Science.

In addition to Telnet access, BioMOO_ also provides Web gateway access [ http://bioinformatics.weizmann.ac.il:8888/]

A brief description of _BioMOO_ was published in _The Biochemist_
(August 1997)
; a more detailed treatment can be found in _Internet for the Molecular Biologist_ edited by Simon R. Swindell, R. Russell Miller, Garry S.A. Myers.. Norfolk, England ; Portland, Or. : Horizon Scientific Press,
c1996. [ ISBN: 1898486026 ]
Glusman-Gustavo; Mercer-Eric and Rubin-Irit. "Real-time collaboration on the Internet: BioMOO, the biologists virtual meeting place." pp. 107-122.

Thanks to Christian, Michael and Jason for their referral to _BioMOO_

As search in Google under BioMOO will reveal some of the broad range of users and applications of BioMOO!

Now,wIth a clearer idea of what I had it mind [it does help to know what you're looking for when you look for it {;)] I'd be interested in learning about the use MOOs/MUDs in other *professions* that offers identical features/functions as _BioMOO_ [virtual classrooms, journal clubs, virtual seminars, etc.] for members of a profession.[I'm *not* interested so much in the application but in the profession, e.g. is there a _AstroMOO_ for Astronomers or a ZooMOO [:>] for Zoologists?

As Always, Any and All contributions, suggestions, comments, queries, cosmic insights are Most Welcome!
