Duke University, Perkins Library System
The Perkins Library System is in the process of implementing its strategic
plan for 2000-2005 to support Duke's institutional imperatives, one of
which is to integrate technology into every aspect of academic life. A
major initiative of the plan is to create the Digital Library at Duke. We
seek a visionary, innovative and energetic individual to provide
leadership for all information technology activities, with particular
emphasis on this new initiative. Building on the work of the Digital
Library Initiatives Task Force, the Director will develop and implement a
comprehensive program for digital library services by articulating goals
and objectives; recommending organizational structure; and forging
alliances with faculty, students, the professional school libraries and
other organizations at Duke, as well as with regional, national and
international groups. The successful candidate will also be an analytical
thinker and an agent for change, with the ability to articulate and
communicate a vision for outstanding information technology services and
to enlist the support of faculty, students and library staff for
implementing new and innovative services. The position reports to the
University Librarian, who is also the Vice Provost for Library Affairs. A

Qualifications
Required: master's degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association or an equivalent combination of education and
experience; minimum of five years of substantial and progressively more
responsible experience in information technology in a research library,
including management of personnel and budget; knowledge of current trends
in computing and information systems; experience in developing digital
library services; training and/or experience in project management and
systems analysis and design; strong service orientation; demonstrated
leadership skills as well as strong interpersonal and oral and written
communication skills; ability to establish effective working relationships
in a collaborative environment; capacity to thrive in a rapidly changing
environment; commitment to the importance of diversity in the academic
community.
Salary and Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, $75,000
minimum. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 12
days sick leave, 13 holidays; health, dental, disability and life
insurance; retirement plan options; educational assistance and tuition
grants.
