Brian Kelly wrote a nice article in Ariadne, issue 20, on customized
404s: http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue20/404/

Although it doesn't directly address the issue with Alpha, it features
commentary on what makes a good customized 404 page and it provides
screenshots and links to great examples.

Hope this helps.
