NCSU LIBRARIES RECRUITMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
COLLECTIONS LIBRARIAN FOR DISTANCE LEARNING SERVICES
The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Collections Librarian for Distance
Learning Services. The Libraries' innovative Distance Learning Services
Department develops resources and services for students and faculty
engaged in courses conducted away from the N. C. State campus, including
a growing number of degree programs in science and engineering
disciplines.
The department, composed of three librarians and a computing consultant,
works closely with staff in Collection Management, Research and
Information Services, Access and Delivery Services, and Digital Library
Initiatives in order
to accomplish its goals.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Head of Distance Learning Services, acts as a
principal partner with Collection Management, working with cooperative
organizations to select and acquire electronic resources in all
disciplines. Plays a key role in negotiating consortial license
agreements with vendors and publishers that support N. C. State's
regular and distance learning curricula. Develops and maintains
relationships with faculty members and students to determine collection
needs and priorities across multiple disciplines, recommends collection
strategies to faculty, and investigates the conversion of materials to
digital formats when appropriate. Publicizes
and demonstrates digital library collections and services to the
distance
learning audience. Analyzes and responds to needs for multiple copies
of
print materials, and selects and manages print materials located in
off-campus locations. Contributes to the development of the Distance
Learning Services web
site. Assists in the design and delivery of general and
iscipline-specific
instructional sessions for distance learners and of web-based tutorials
and
research resources.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Three or more years relevant
professional experience, such as experience with electronic resources in
an instructional or service context. Strong background in collection
management for academic libraries, including experience with vendor
negotiations and content licensing. Familiarity with major issues and
trends in collection development and scholarly communication, especially
those related to the management and delivery of digital content.
Understanding of the educational mission of a research university and
the
changing learning environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly,
knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing, with clients and
colleagues. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment;
ability
to work independently. Ability to manage multiple projects and
priorities
effectively.
Preferred: Experience including instructional partnerships with faculty
members or delivery of collections and services to distance learners.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
not less than $43,000 for this position. Librarians have academic status
without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 26 days vacation, 12 days
sick leave; health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO);
and state, TIAA/CREF or other retirement options. Additional and
optional dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal
plans
are available. Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The
University of
North Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
