The University of Michigan Digital Library Production Service
is seeking a web services programmer to participate
in the development of online access systems for core digital
library collections. The Digital Library Production Service
is a federated organization, combining resources from the
University Library, the Media Union, and the Information Technology
Division. Online collection resources include significant image-
and text-based journal collections, art image collections, and
a leading-edge SGML/XML development effort. The Web Services
Programmer will be responsible for development and support in
the University Library. The position will require significant
CGI programming and work with database applications (e.g.
CGI mechanisms to direct users to databases maintained by Library
departments and external publishers). Help redesign and
support the web environment at the University of Michigan Library.
Working as part of the Library web group, the programmer will need to
program and provide technical recommendations for dynamic web sites,
metadata specifications, web databases, and CGI scripts.
PART OF THIS JOB MAY REQUIRE SOME WORK OUTSIDE OF NORMAL WORKING
HOURS TO ANALYZE AND CORRECT CRITICAL PROBLEMS THAT ARISE IN
THE 24 HOURS A DAY OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT. SALARY DEPENDENT ON
PREVIOUS RELEVANT EXPERIENCE. MINIMUM $29,600.00. THIS IS A 2 YEAR
TERM APPOINTMENT.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Java and JavaScript, SQL, demonstrated experience with CGI
programming; demonstrated experience in server administration
in a distributed environment; knowledge of distributed computing
application software; experience with wide-area (internet)
networking resources; Windows NT; familiarity with the
UM computing environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree (computer science or engineering preferred)
or equivalent education and experience; Perl, relational
databases, UNIX and troubleshooting on a TCP/IP network,
HTML; ability to work comfortably and effectively with a
distributed development/implementation team and in a diverse
work environment; good written and verbal skills.
