Chris, I have been waiting to see responses to your message
about configuring a Gates computer clone. I was hoping to
get a tip or two also. :-) But since I have see no
responses I will tell you what I have done with similar
issues.
After having a good deal of trouble getting any of the CD
software to run on my "clones" when logged in as "all", I
called Gates Foundation for help. (I have discovered that
if you call between 6 - 7 am PDT you generally get MUCH
better help. They have fewer people on the desk - but they
have MANY fewer calls that early in the morning. I have had
them spend an hour with me on the phone working on various
issues.) After some discussion of the problem, we
realized that I was attempting to set up the computer using
my own logic -- and, guess what? -- there is a booklet
titled "The GCTA Public Access Standalone Model" published
April 1999. It gives step by step directions on setting up
a Gates clone. They sent it to me and it was a tremendous
help! I now have a PC running Encarta, Encarta Africana,
the trip and streets software, and Encarta Virtual Globe.
As far as I can tell, I also have all the Gates' profiles
and policies, security and restrictions working on this
computer.
Good luck with your project!
