Gary,

Sure everyone's got the hard-drive space--why, there's hard-drive space out
there galore--but think about the burden on the delivery system (i.e. the
network) that large PDF files impose--particularly if you want to deliver
the things off site via the Web.  Even if you were only offering the files
in-house, you have to decide whether you just want them for printing or for
downloading as well.  If you want them for downloading then they have to
fit on the removeable storage media you have available in the library.  In
our case, that's a plain old 1.4 floppy.

I think the format sucks but it can be made to work in a normal document
production environment and it's widespread enough so that your end-user is
likely to be able to access it.
