Hiding the tray or tray contents

Does anyone know how to either hide the tray or the tray icons where the
clock display is at in Windows 95/98?  Some of the icons can be closed or
told not to display but there are a few icons that refuse to cooperate.

We want to hide them but not disable or close the program that is
associated with the icon.
