POSITION: Director, Digital Library of Georgia
DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Administration
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Digital Library of Georgia is a virtual collection of digitized
books, images, manuscripts and media with the emphasis on material
important to the history and culture of the state of Georgia. The
Digital Library of Georgia is a part of GALILEO, Georgias statewide
electronic library.
The Director of the Digital Library of Georgia reports to the
University Librarian and consults with the Executive Director of
GALILEO for the coordination of digitization projects for University
System institutions and archive collections throughout the state of
Georgia, as well as leading digitization efforts for the University
Libraries. The Director serves as the representative for these
efforts at the state, regional, and national levels. This Director
will manage an annual budget of over $1 million for the creation of
digital content and will also be expected to build upon this base
allocation by obtaining grants and developing other sources of outside
funding for ongoing or new digital projects.
The Department is housed in the Main Library of the University of
Georgia and is comprised of three professional and eight staff
positions. It is expected that the department will relocate to a new
special collections building in a few years. Travel is required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops, maintains, and expands knowledge of digital libraries and
digital technology and preservation issues, keeping abreast of current
trends in the field through professional literature and by
participating in continuing education and professional development
activities.
Develops a comprehensive digital library in consultation with an
advisory board of scholars, librarians, and archivists and with the
GALILEO Steering Committee to determine priorities for digitization
projects.
Coordinates interaction between state agencies involved in creation
and presentation of original digital content, including digital
production units, bibliographic control units for digital projects,
GALILEO automation unit, digital media production units, special
collections departments, and others to ensure that production goals
are met and user needs are addressed.
Develops and maintains a competent and productive staff by supervising
and training directly and through delegation all personnel in the
department.
Pursues sources of funding for the creation, access, and maintenance
of the digital archives by submitting grant proposals and
investigating other funding sources (such as corporate and private
funding) and oversees work on projects that are supported.
Represents the Libraries and GALILEO by participating in associations
and professional meetings at state, regional, and national levels.
Participates in general library administration by serving on
appropriate committees as assigned and by planning and developing
policy on a library-wide basis.
Ensures efficient operations through work standards, quality control
and statistical analysis.
Participates in planning for a new special collections building by
assisting the University Librarian and others in the design and
development of this facility.
Identifies, evaluates and acquire appropriate equipment for digital
projects by keeping abreast of current trends in the field.
Maintain flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the
department by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as
assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree and ACA archival certification or ALA-accredited MLS,
or equivalent combination of education and experience; Significant
experience in the Information Technology profession including
experience in managing a technical, computer based project or
department; Broad academic background, with strong interest in history
and literature preferred; Familiarity with digital technology
practices, and standards; Familiarity with intellectual property
issues; Successful experience with writing grant proposals and
managing grant projects; Familiarity with budgeting and cost analysis
of digital projects preferred; Strong leadership and organizational
skills; Effective oral and written communication skills; Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with
colleagues, faculty, and library users; Experience in an academic
library preferred.
BENEFITS: Standard benefits package includes life, health and
disability insurance and mandatory participation in the state or
optional retirement system, and 21 days annual leave, plus 12 paid
holidays. Salary : $50,000, commensurate with experience. For
