POSITION:       Manager of Instructional Support Services & Web Coordinator 
        (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor)

APPOINTMENT:    Full-time, 12-month, continuing

AVAILABLE:      January 2, 2001

ENVIRONMENT:

The library services of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) are
centralized in Morris Library.  Its four subject divisions hold more than
2.4 million volumes, 3.1 million microform units, and over 12,500 current
periodicals and serials.  Library users have access to ILLINET Online (the
statewide automated system) and to numerous electronic resources via the
Library's local area network, the Campus-Wide Information System, and the
Internet.  As the campus center for access to academic information and
collaborative academic technology projects, the Library's staff of 31
faculty, 10 Administrative/ Professional (A/P) staff, and 70 Civil Service
employees provide a wide range of services, including reference assistance,
instructional and technical support, distance learning, geographic
information systems (GIS), and multimedia courseware development.  The
Library's principal units are Public and Collection Development Services,
Instructional Support Services (which includes the Regional Center for
Distance Learning and Multimedia Development), Special Collections and
Development Services, Technical and Automation Services, and the Ulysses S.
Grant Association. Instructional Support Services offers a wide variety of
services to support the instructional mission of the University through the
use of instructional design and development, instructional evaluation,
instructional technology, distance learning, World Wide Web and multimedia
development, video production, and graphics production.  Morris Library is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research
Libraries, and the Big 12 Plus Library Consortium.  Additional information

by collective bargaining. 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general direction of the Director for Instructional Support
Services (ISS), the Manager of Instructional Support Services is
responsible for the day-to-day operation of ISS, the Library's web
development, and for the development and maintenance of network-based
information.  This position works closely with the Assistant Instructional
Development Librarian to provide instructional design support for faculty.
Specific duties include:  supervising 8.5 FTE Civil Service staff, 5
administrative/professional staff, 1.5 FTE faculty, 11 graduate assistants,
and several student assistants; developing and delivering workshops;
serving as a Library Liaison to academic departments; selecting
instructional videos; working with faculty and staff members in the Library
and on campus to use resources in the Library and on the World Wide Web for
the improvement of teaching and learning; and working with the Southern
Illinois Collegiate Common Market, the Southwestern Illinois Higher
Education Consortium, and the Regional Center for Distance Learning and
Multimedia Development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program; record of
success as a manager; understanding of the use of the World Wide Web as a
tool for teaching and learning and for information dissemination;
competence with current library automation; excellent oral and written
communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to organize
work and work well under pressure; ability to lead people and manage
projects; ability to meet criteria for promotion and tenure, including
professional service and published research.  

Preferred:  Experience or training in web and multimedia development.

SALARY: $45,000 minimum.
