winmail.dat?

Does anyone know anything about winmail.dat?  I tried to use Microsoft's
support service and could not find anything that seemed to make sense.

When I send attachments using Outlook 98 some reciptients receive something
similar to the following message in place of the attachment:

[[ RECOMM~1.DOC : 56 in winmail.dat ]] 

Does anyone have any ideas of how to correct this?  I'm sure it is a setting
somewhere, but I can't find it in help or on the Microsoft website.  I'm
hoping that one of you have an idea.
