I'm a satisfied user of the Internet Junkbuster proxy -- it not only
removes banners it selectively blocks cookies and the HTTP_REFERER header
making browsing a more private matter. There are Windows and Unix versions
(I've only ever used the Unix one) and it's free!.

The standard version blocks the graphic leaving the broken link icon in its
place -- if you prefer to block without the broken image icon there is a
version that replaces banners with blank images, leaving the page much more
beautiful after blocking. This is available at
<http://www.waldherr.org/junkbuster/>, along with frequently updated block
lists so that you don't have to roll your own.
