The browser appears to be the central product. All other add-ons are
optional. I believe they're trying to address the issue of "bloatware" and

If anyone comes across articles addressing W3C standards and the newer
browsers
and/or mobile devices, please send citations. In other words, I'm looking for
"expert" support on why standards compliance for developers will become more
and more important as browsers mature and the means of accessing the web
diversifies.
