SOLVED! W98 Upgrade/Net Loss Problem

I want to thank everyone for their help.  I was contemplating selling 
my wayward to some local fishermen to use as boat anchors.  :^)

However, the mystery has been solved:

The culprit was Fortres.  I had disabled Fortres but did not un-
install it.  To properly load the Windows upgrade, I had to 
completely uninstall Fortres, load the Windows98 upgrade and 
then re-install Fortres.
