Jane:

There is a simple way to get rid of the "autocomplete" feature that
"completes" the URL for you automatically according to previously typed in
URLs.  

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Internet Settings

Select the "Advanced" tab and unclick the "Use AutoComplete" feature in the
list of "Browsing" settings.  Hope this helps!
