Rosemary,

We're trying to go to just web versions of our indexes and other databases,
as others have already mentioned. Then you can either manage passwords or
have the vendor only allow your IP address ranges or both. If you choose to
use ip addresses as the password, then students who want access from outside
will need to have access via an intermediary computer. PCAnywhere or one of
any number of proxy server programs will work. If you haven't yet bought, or
will be buying soon, check out this deal from Microsoft.

be sure to click on the order now link to see the details, nothing is
actually ordered.

If you buy NT 4.0 server and a minimum of 40 client licenses, you send in
proof of purchase and the rebate form and Microsoft will send you for free:
60 client licenses (think more simultaneous logins or individual account
logins depending on how you configure NT), Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, and
an upgrade to Windows 2000 Server when it's released. And you can qualify
multiple times. It's a good deal. Really. And my only connection to Redmond
is a cousin once removed who is some kind of contract worker.
