L&S/COMPUTER SCIENCES - Associate Researcher or Researcher
The Associate Researcher will be a part of the Internet Scout
Project, located in the Computer Sciences Department of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, and funded by the National Science
Foundation (NSF). The goal of the Internet Scout Project is to
improve effective access to quality resources on the Internet. The
researcher in this position will work on an international project,
called the IMesh Toolkit, funded through NSF's Digital Libraries II
(DLI2) initiative http://www.dli2.nsf.gov/, specifically the DLI2
International Digital Libraries Project

Internet Scout Project will collaborate with colleagues in England at
the University of Bath and the University of Bristol on the Imesh
Toolkit on this three year project. The chosen candidate will be the
primary programmer and primary technical contact for the Internet
Scout Project's portion of the work on this international
collaborative work.

**DEGREE AND AREA OF SPECIALIZATION**
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Sciences.
**MINIMUM NUMBER OF YEARS AND TYPE OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE**
- Minimum 2 years experience programming with C, C++, Perl, and Java
in a Unix environment. Experience building finished, distributable
Unix products.
- Minimum 1 year experience programming with TCP/IP sockets and
implementing new protocols on top of TCP/IP; experience with web
programming including CGI and HTML.
- Experience or ability to design general and reusable APIs.
- Understanding of database internals; understanding of web-specific
metadata issues is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of and interest in current web technologies and protocols
including LDAP, XML, and RDF, and the research issues involved in
information retrieval on the Internet. Experience building or using
distributed information services and protocols such as STARTS,
Harvest, or NSCTRL is highly desirable.
- Good writing, public speaking, and general communication skills.
**PRINCIPAL DUTIES**
1. Act as the primary programmer and primary technical contact for
the Internet Scout Project's portion of the work on the IMesh Toolkit
project. The work will begin with the research and development of an
overall architecture for resource discovery and information retrieval
done through "subject gateways", highly selective collections of
Internet resources that include metadata about each resource. Based
on this architecture, a set of tools for subject gateway management
and interoperability will be integrated and distributed.
2. Take a lead role in the development and design of general and
reusable APIs. Also, work within the research team to develop and
implement resource discovery services using Internet protocols such
as the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Common Indexing
Protocol (CIP), and to a lesser extent, Whois++, and Z39.50. Create
database schema translators and protocol translation gateways.
Install and configure LDAP directory
services components.
3. Attend national and international conferences and present the
research and development work being done on the IMesh Toolkit Project
by the Internet Scout Project and our colleagues in England. Further
the ongoing development of directory services protocols on the
Internet by working within the appropriate Internet Engineering Task
Force (IETF) working groups. Collaborate with research colleagues at
other universities and institutions, including programmers,
librarians, and scientists.
