[WEB4LIB] Selecting CD ROMS for Public Access PCs

I would be interested in this also.  I too have bought versions of CDs that
were not network friendly.

I'm not sure if this is an appropriate topic for this list, but if it
isn't, perhaps someone can direct me to another list.

I've just been burned by two CD ROMs that I bought for our public access
PCs: Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia and Encarta Virtual Globe 99. It
turns out that I needed to buy the network version of Grolier's in order
to run it from the hard drive (as opposed to running it from CD ROM
drives). And in WinNT, Virtual Globe only runs if you have Administrative
access.

Because I've been burned before, I had bought evaluation copies to test.
However, I'm sure that other libraries are going through the same kind of
trial and error picking which CD ROMs to buy and then figuring out how to
secure them for public access PCs.

Would anyone be interested in sharing this kind of information on this
list? Or, is there another list where this is already being done? (I
checked out Liszt Search and The List of Lists, but didn't find anything
that seemed to cover this.
