Here in the Purdue University Libraries we are also struggling with these
same issues of control, conformity, autonomy, cohesiveness, and clarity. A
group of us are actually in the process of developing a survey to determine
what the tendencies are within university/college libraries nationwide
(worldwide). We plan to publish this as an article in the future. Many of
the comments and opinions expressed will help us considerably in this
research project. (Here at Purdue it's publish or perish for the librarians
too.)
Tami Jo: If you do have any more replies that were not posted to the list I
would greatly appreciate receiving a copy. Thanks.
Now for a summary of our own situation. The Purdue Libraries are a
decentralized system with 15 campus libraries. The Web is currently an
area of discussion as the location to bring the libraries together as one.
This discussion has yet to be resolved.
We are operating under a consistent look and feel as well as several
unapproved policies and procedures for design etc. We upload our Web
documents through a pair of people who actually do the transfer to the
'public' region.
We do not have to answer in any way to the University's Webmaster other
than the correct use of logos etc. We only have to deal with our internal
situation and "Purdue way" of accomplishing things.
If anyone has any other opinions on this or anything they'd like to comment
on or suggest for our study please contact me directly.
Regards,
-hal

Here we are overlooking Suicide Gulch, about to hurl ourselves down at
breakneck speed in a sled that hardly steers. Risking life and limb!
Looking death straight in the eye!
"Why?" you ask. Why do we do it?
Because we get paid I hope.
Because it's there!!
