Assistant Head, Digital Library Production Service

Title: Assistant Head, Digital Library Production Service
Division: Digital Library Initiatives
Supervisor: Head, Digital Library Production Service
Classification: Senior Associate Librarian

Digital Library Production Service
The Digital Library Production Service (DLPS), a part of the University of
Michigan University Library, is UM's key organization for creation,
deployment and support of local digital library collections. DLPS provides
production level support for electronic library collections in a number of
subject and format areas. Online collection resources include significant
image- and text-based journal collections, art image collections, and a
leading edge SGML/XML development effort. Staff members within the DLPS
assume responsibility for creating access mechanisms, data loading,
security, accounting and billing mechanisms, as well as creation and
conversion activities. DLPS provides these services to the University of
Michigan as well as other institutions.

Position Description
The Assistant Head of DLPS serves in two primary capacities. As a senior
staff member in the organization, the Assistant Head has significant
administrative and supervisory responsibilities, ranging from unit
resource management to supervision and hiring of staff. Along with the
DLPS service coordinators, the DLPS Chief Programmer, and the Head of
DLPS, the Assistant Head of DLPS works as a part of a management team
within DLPS. During absences by the Head of DLPS, the Assistant Head of
DLPS coordinates DLPS functions and represents DLPS at management meetings
such as ITD Academic Support Leadership Team and Library Senior Managers,
as well as for all external vendor contacts. The Assistant Head of DLPS
works directly with the Head of DLPS in planning and resource allocation
activities (e.g., for creating project budgets), providing a coordinating
role for the DLPS management team.

The Assistant Head of DLPS also serves in a cross-organizational data
management role, initiating and then coordinating an ongoing effort to
"register" DLPS digital objects in a single registry (DLPS Registry). The
Assistant Head leads the effort to design, establish, and eventually
manage this database, which will initially contain approximately two
million distinct bibliographic objects under the direct control of DLPS. A
critical role of the DLPS Registry will be to store permanent information
about these objects, such as locations for online access, storage of
masters, and methods and tools for capture.

Additionally, all DLPS professional staff members take part in project
management. The Assistant Head of DLPS assumes a greater role in this
area, leading most major projects. Project management consists of moving a
product or collection through all stages of implementation (occasionally
including vendor negotiations) and subsequent management.
