Michael Dargan raises an excellent point-- the last few years have seen
the "leading" PC vendors moving into the "workstation" market.
Historically, workstations were either unix-based machines made by people
like Sun or Silicon Graphics, or were seriously meaty PCs custom-built by
integrated applications vendors (mostly for engineering applications). The
recent advances in PC processor technology has opened this high-end desktop
market to the more traditional office-applications manufacturers, like
Compaq, Micron and Dell.

Oftentimes, the high-end legacy of these workstation PCs means that they're
built to meet the demand for the high input/output/disk access and fast
memory access that are of most concern in server applications.
