In Phillip's highlight of some of the articles in this month's issue of
Ariadne, he unfortunately did not mention an article that many subscribers
on this list (those of you who manage a web server) should read:

Brian surveys UK University web sites to see what kind of 404 error (not
found) they return, and not surprisingly finds most of them wanting.
Before you begin gloating, however, enter a bogus URL on *your* server and
see what you get. Then consider how helpful that may be or not be to your
users trying to find something on your site. The default message you get
with the server is garbage, so if you haven't yet done something different
you owe it to your users to read this article. Brian shows pages from
sites that do it well, as well as identifies "What Should Institutional
404 Error Messages Contain?".
