>A bit more on visual metaphors for information retrieval:
Thanks for your latest posting on Information Visualization!
As you are aware, I have been interested in the application of
Information Visualization for accessing, organizing, and navigating
Web (and non-Web databases) for the pasy few years.
You will find the Kohonen as well as several other Information
Visualization technologies profiled in two of my clearinghouses
_The Big Picture(sm): Visual Browsing in Web and non-Web Databases_ at
[ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/BigPic.htm ]
[Compiled with the assistance of Peter J. Wasilko ]
and
_Project Aristotle(sm): Automated Categorization of Web Resources_ at:
I have speculated the application of both in several journal and magazine articles, notably
"The Once and Future Library" in _Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship_ Fall 1996
and
"As The World (Wide Web) Turns: Resources at Iowa State"
in _D-Lib Magazine_ August 1998
[http://www.dlib.org/dlib/july98/07clips.html#GERRY]
>I'm curious, are there any "production" implementations of this approach in >libraries?
More recently I speculate on this and other emerging technologies
and their potential for alternative information display and manipulation in my working essay "Morning Becomes Electric: Post-Modern Scholarly Information Access, Organization, and Navigation"
at [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/Morning.htm ]
In particular see the NAVIGATION section
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/Morning.htm#Navigation
[BTW: This essay will form the basis of a presentation I will be making next week at the annual meeting of the Society for
Scholarly Publishing in Boston, June 9 - 11, 1999 [ http://www.sspnet.org/ ]
[I will be staying at the Westin Copley; if there are Boston-area
Web4Libers who would like to join me for a beer (or two) let me know! ].
Thanks again for recognizing the potential benefits of
Information Visualization.
Regards,

P.S. One of the best Information Visualization sites of which I am aware is that overseen by Ben Shneiderman called _OLIVE_
