ALA Annual: Resources for Distance Learning

On behalf of the Internet Resources Interest Group (IRIG), a committee of
LITA, you are cordially invited  to attend  "Resources for Distance
Learning: Tools for Development & Support," on Sat. June 26, 1999  from 9:30
AM to 12:30 PM at Sheraton New Orleans, Gr. BR C during ALA Annual 1999.
The cassette of this taped session will also be available for purchase at
ALA. 

You won't want to miss hearing three dynamic, experienced and practicing
professionals who will address the selection of Internet tools necessary to
deliver either remote learning or reference services in a virtual
environment, on-site and off-site reference and library support,
authentication, faculty web page training, cost and relevant Internet-based
tools including group web browsing; text-chatting; desktop sharing;
break-out rooms for small group discussions); archive of live sessions
(including all class components--audio, images, text--with events
synchronized for seamless playback); collaborative document creation and
editing (create, edit, and share  documents online without leaving one's web
browser).

Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 
"LEEP3: An Internet-based Program for Graduate  Professional Education"
where communication is accomplished synchronously through RealAudio and
textchat as well as asynchronously through webboards. In addition to
instructor-authored web pages,  students make use of textbooks, course
packs, electronic  reserves, and materials available at libraries near
their homes or obtained with the assistance of the  Academic Outreach
Library as well as other on-line  technical support. 

2. Anne K. Abate, Ph.D. Adjunct Faculty, Nova Southeastern University Fort
Lauderdale, Florida
Dr. Abate recently completed her dissertation on distance learning and will
address Internet-based reference and library support identified
Internet-based distance learning needs, applications, emerging trends. 

3. Stephanie F. Race, Director Florida Distance Learning Reference &
Referral Center, which provides a virtual 
reference desk for students enrolled in off-campus courses offered by
regionally accredited, Florida-based  universities and colleges, will
discuss the center's experiences, roles and challenges in providing services
to remote users in a virtual environment. The Center is designed to
complement the primary services provided by  the distance learner's college,
university, and public libraries. Florida Distance Learning Library
