I can't imagine "most" laptops nowadays have 256 colors (known
affectionately as 8 bit color)--that really harkens back to the pre-Super
VGA age of Windows 3.0. The Compac Presarios which we bought for student
use here over a year ago--just to take one example--are quite fine with up
to 24 bit color (i.e. millions of colors).
You can tell a computer running 256 colors by the distinctly grainy
appearence of photographic images. Most Wintel machines still
come--ludricously enough--with 256 colors as the default setting which is
like running a new car at no more than five miles an hour.
